The heat is on!

Ask
Your Assemblymember to Co-Sponsor Assemblymember
O'Donnell's Marriage Bill
We are excited that Governor Spitzer’s marriage
program bill has now been officially assigned its
prime sponsors. All the hard work
you’ve been doing on marriage equality is moving
this issue forward
in the
Legislature!
Assemblymember
Daniel O’Donnell (D-Manhattan) will be carrying
the bill in the Assembly and formally introducing
it in the very near future. He picks up the
marriage equality issue from Assemblymember
Richard Gottfried (D-Manhattan) who has championed
it since 2002. Assemblymember Gottfried, as
well as Assemblymembers Deborah Glick
(D-Manhattan) and Matthew Titone (D-Staten Island)
(the other LGBT members of the Assembly) have
already said that they are sponsoring the
O’Donnell measure and stand united in their
determination to act on this issue as part of
their House’s tradition of being in the forefront
of civil rights and equality. Senator Thomas
Duane (D-Manhattan) will continue to be the
sponsor of the marriage equality bill in the
Senate.
The Assembly measure is
ready to receive co-sponsors. During the
next several days, it is important that you work
with us to get as many Assemblymembers as possible
to become co-sponsors of the new marriage equality
bill. Even
people who have co-sponsored the initiative in the
past need to sign onto it again. Contact
your Assemblymember right now in as few as three
clicks of your mouse and ask him or her to become
a sponsor of the Governor’s new marriage equality
legislation, being spearheaded by Assemblymember
O’Donnell.
And if you another minute or
two, also pick up the phone and call them to
deliver the same message. Click here to get the Albany phone
number of your Assemblymember.
Your
work on co-sponsorship is vital to continuing the
momentum we need to pass the bill in the Assembly
this year. Working together with
Assemblymember O’Donnell and our friends in the
Legislature we can make this
happen!
P.S. We’re
so glad that over 1100 of you joined us in
Albany yesterday
for Equality & Justice Day. In the
next several days we’ll be sending you
a complete
report of what happened as well as
updates on our legislative scorecard on
marriage equality, GENDA and Dignity.

Subject: Please co-sponsor Assemblymember
O'Donnell's marriage bill
Dear [decision maker name automatically
inserted here],
As you may know, Governor Eliot Spitzer has
recently introduced a program bill to allow
same-sex couples to marry. This new bill is being
carried in the Assembly by Assemblymember Daniel
O'Donnell.
As your constituent, I believe
that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT)
families must have the same protections as all
other New Yorkers. Loving same-sex couples and
their children should not be treated like
second-class citizens by being denied access to
marriage--the legal institution used by government
to help people care for each other and their
children. While the Governor's legislation does
not require any religious institution to perform a
marriage that goes against its religious beliefs,
it does cure this inequity and allow same-sex
couples to get civilly married and secure the
protections they so vitally need for their
families.
I encourage you to support the
Governor's Marriage Equality program bill being
sponsored by Assemblymember O'Donnell and
Sincerely,
John
Bradley
