Subject: Our Bill is Moving in the U.S. Senate…

It’s time to act. In the next 24 hours, the Senate is expected to vote on a hate crimes bill. This is legislation that The Interfaith Alliance has supported for the last ten years.  With your calls and emails to your senators, we can pass this critical bill covering all victims of hate crimes and provide law enforcement with the resources they’ve requested to address these crimes.  Please click here to urge your senators to enact the hate crimes bill today!

The Senate is expected to consider S. 1105, the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crime Prevention Act of 2007 (LLEHCPA) as early as tomorrow as an amendment to the DoD authorization bill. As we told you recently, the Religious Right continues to claim to represent all religious people in its efforts to defeat hate crimes legislation.  We need you tell your senators: Hate and exclusion are neither religious nor democratic values.

The LLEHCPA, already passed by the House of Representatives will, for the first time, allow for the federal prosecution of certain hate crimes based on sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, and disability. This critical piece of legislation will also provide local police and sheriff's departments with vital federal resources to address hate crimes on a larger, more inclusive scale.

Click here to contact your senator and urge him/her to support the hate crimes bill.

Sincerely,

P.S. Without the hate crimes bill, many hate crimes committed in our country will continue to go unrecognized, unprosecuted, and unpunished. Please contact your senatorsand tell them support this critical piece of legislation.
