Many of you have been following a June 1st alleged hate crime in Rochester that may have been mishandled badly by responding police officers. Today's Democrat and Chronicle [http://tinyurl.com/2xzys9] reports on the internal investigation. Below is GAGV's press release... -----Original Message----- From: Webmaster [mailto:noreply [at] gayalliance.org] Sent: 26 July, 2007 8:02 AM To: johnclint [at] gmail.com Subject: Gay Alliance Responds to Ongoing Hate Crime Investigation Gay Alliance of the Gensee Valley For Immediate Release Gay Alliance Responds to Ongoing Hate Crime Investigation Rochester NY, July 25, 2007 Police Chief David Moore announced today that the Rochester Police Department's internal and criminal investigations of the events of June 1st are complete. The internal investigation results are now in the hands of the Chief's command staff and the Civilian Review Board. The results of the criminal investigation have been handed over to the District Attorney. The Gay Alliance has closely followed this case and conducted its own investigation into the event that is believed to be a hate crime incident coupled with police misconduct. We will continue to monitor both the criminal and internal investigations until their conclusion, and respond accordingly at that time. The Gay Alliance has collaborated with the City since 1982 to push for more appropriate treatment of all citizens, particularly its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members. This case highlights the need for an approach that includes coordinated training and joint working group between the Gay Alliance and RPD. Chief Moore has already agreed to work closely with the Gay Alliance to enhance both rookie and veteran officer training to include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender information. This curricula development is being fast-tracked for inclusion into the next round of training, likely to occur in the fall. "This case highlights the need for comprehensive training, not just cursory information, for all officers, not just rookies," stated Kris Hinesley, Executive Director of the Gay Alliance. " Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members of this community are largely supportive of what the police are trying to do. We simply want to be treated with the same degree of respect as the rest of the community. We hear of too many cases that involve police misconduct. The training we are developing will begin to address this problem for the long term."
